Losing your sense of smell or taste as you get older?
New exponential technologies can help improve our senses
Ric Edelman: Really glad you're with me here this weekend on The Truth About Your Future. One of my favorite segments each week is bringing you the latest innovations in the field of exponential technologies. Here's something really cool. Have you lost your sense of smell? Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University have created an electronic nose. It translates the chemical makeup of odors, converts them into electric signals, which are then sent to electrodes implanted into the brain. This bypasses the nerves that aren't working properly. This electronic nose could be installed in a pair of glasses and send signals wirelessly to the implant. You know, scientists have long known that our sense of taste starts to decrease around age 60. Well, now the University of Maine has developed a spoon that artificially juices up the perception of saltiness. They expect this to be commercialized within five years. And that's why I like to talk about exponential technologies every week here on the program.
